The Nile Forced Through Rock

Uganda’s Largest Park, Africa’s Most Powerful Waterfall

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda in its most elemental form. Here, the Victoria Nile — already ancient and vast — forces itself through a narrow 7-metre crack in the earth and detonates downward in a white-water explosion that generates a permanent rainbow and a roar audible for kilometres. It is the world’s most powerful waterfall by flow-force, and the beating heart of Uganda’s largest national park.

Beyond the falls, 3,840 square kilometres of savanna, riverine forest, and wetland unfold across the northern Albertine Rift. Rothschild’s giraffes — among the world’s rarest large mammals — stride above the acacia canopy. Enormous Nile crocodiles bask on every sandbank. The Nile boat safari upstream to the falls base is East Africa’s finest water-based wildlife experience.

Hippos by the hundreds. Crocodiles. African fish eagles. Then the falls themselves, growing louder with every river bend until the boat is drenched in mist. Our 5-Day Murchison Falls Safari is one of our most loved Uganda itineraries.

🎫 Fees & Permits

Park Entry Fee · Per person per day

Boat cruise approximately $30 per person. Chimpanzee tracking at Budongo Forest requires a separate $90–120 permit. All bookable through Apes & Wildlife Safaris.

⚠️ Must Know Before You Go

Murchison is in the hot northern savanna zone — pack light, breathable clothing plus a waterproof layer for boat spray near the falls. Anti-malaria precautions strongly recommended. The Paraa ferry crossing operates on schedule and is an adventure in itself — hippos surface alongside the boat.

Biodiversity

Wildlife & Natural Highlights

01 — Rothschild’s Giraffes

Africa’s Rarest Giraffe

Among the world’s most endangered large mammals, Rothschild’s giraffes were reintroduced to Murchison and now number over 1,500 — one of the world’s largest populations. Identifiable by unmarked legs, these magnificent animals dominate northern bank game drives.

02 — Nile Wildlife

Hippos & Crocodiles

Over 5,000 hippos inhabit the Victoria Nile — one of Africa’s densest populations. Nile crocodiles, some exceeding 5 metres, cover every sandbank. The Nile boat safari delivers encounters that no land-based game drive can replicate.

03 — Elephants

Large Savanna Herds

Murchison has one of Uganda’s largest elephant populations, regularly crossing between Budongo Forest and open savanna. Both banks of the Nile deliver reliable elephant sightings across the year.

04 — Shoebill Stork

Africa’s Most Sought-After Bird

Murchison’s papyrus swamps harbour the shoebill stork — one of Africa’s most prehistoric-looking birds. Early morning boat excursions into the Nile delta’s papyrus vegetation offer the best encounters with this extraordinary species.

05 — Predators

Lions & Leopards

Lion prides roam the northern bank savanna, frequently seen on the Buligi game circuit. Leopards are present and secretive — dawn and dusk drives with expert trackers maximise sighting probability.

06 — Primates

Chimpanzees at Budongo

The Budongo Forest Reserve, adjacent to Murchison’s southern boundary, hosts one of Uganda’s largest chimpanzee communities. Guided treks into Kaniyo Pabidi forest combine perfectly with a Murchison savanna safari.

Park Circuits

Key Areas & Experiences

Murchison is divided by the Nile into northern and southern banks. Most visits combine northern bank game drives with a Nile boat safari and a hike to the falls’ top.

North Bank – Buligi Circuit
🦒 Prime Game Drive Zone

Murchison’s most productive game drive territory. Rothschild’s giraffes, lion prides, elephant herds, buffalo, Uganda kob, and oribi are regularly encountered. Dawn drives on this circuit are among Uganda’s finest safari experiences.

Nile Boat Safari
🚢 River Wildlife Zone

The 17-kilometre boat safari from Paraa to the foot of the falls is non-negotiable. Hippo schools, crocodile colonies, diverse water birds, and the thundering climax at the falls base make this one of East Africa’s defining experiences.

Top of the Falls
💧 Waterfall Hike

A short 45-minute hike from the boat landing delivers you to the falls’ crest — where you can lean over the 7-metre crack and watch the entire Nile compress into white fury below. The permanent rainbow and photography are extraordinary.

Budongo Forest
🐒 Chimpanzee Sector

South of the park, Budongo hosts habituated chimpanzees in mahogany forest. Kaniyo Pabidi ranger post is the base for chimp treks that perfectly complement a northern savanna game drive itinerary.

Insider Knowledge

Essential Tips for Murchison Falls National Park

01

Start North Bank Drives at Dawn

Wildlife density on the Buligi circuit peaks at dawn. Giraffes catching first light against the acacia canopy is an image you will carry forever.

02

Take the Afternoon Boat Safari

The 2pm Nile launch catches hippos at their most active and delivers golden-hour light at the falls base.

03

Hike to the Top of the Falls

After the boat safari, a 45-minute hike leads to the falls’ crest — two completely different perspectives on the same extraordinary event.

04

Combine with Budongo Chimps

Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo adds a primate dimension to the savanna safari. Our itineraries combine both in a seamless northern Uganda circuit.

05

Cross the Paraa Ferry

The ferry crossing from south to north is an adventure — hippos surface alongside the boat. Build time to enjoy the crossing.

06

Arrange a Shoebill Excursion

Ask your guide to arrange a dedicated shoebill boat excursion into the Nile delta papyrus. This bird alone draws ornithologists from around the world.
