Uganda
Safaris
Home to half the world’s mountain gorillas, 1,066 bird species, tree-climbing lions, and chimpanzees that share 98.7% of our DNA. Uganda is Africa’s single greatest concentration of primate diversity — an experience that changes the way you see the world.
Why Uganda Is East Africa’s Most Extraordinary Safari Destination
Winston Churchill called Uganda “the Pearl of Africa” — and no superlative has ever been more accurate. Within a country roughly the size of the United Kingdom, Uganda packs a wildlife diversity that dwarfs most of the continent. Mountain gorillas and chimpanzees in ancient rainforests. Tree-climbing lions on Albertine Rift savannas. Over a thousand bird species in habitats ranging from tropical lowland to Afroalpine moorland.
What sets Uganda apart is intimacy. Unlike the vast, vehicle-dense parks of East Africa’s southern circuit, Uganda’s wildlife experiences are deliberately limited and profoundly personal. You sit within metres of a 200-kilogram silverback for one uninterrupted hour. You track chimpanzees through forest mist with a community that knows every individual by name. You watch Nile crocodiles from the deck of a boat on the Victoria Nile as Murchison Falls thunders a kilometre upstream.
- Home to over 460 mountain gorillas — more than half the world’s entire population in Bwindi and Mgahinga
- Africa’s highest primate diversity — 13 species in a single country, including chimpanzees, colobus, baboons, and pottos
- 1,066 recorded bird species — more than all of Europe combined, making Uganda one of the world’s top birding destinations
- Tree-climbing lions in Ishasha — a behaviour shared globally only with Tanzania’s Lake Manyara
- The world’s most powerful waterfall (Murchison Falls) on the Victoria Nile — accessible by boat and foot
- Year-round gorilla trekking with near-100% encounter success rates regardless of season
- 10 national parks encompassing savanna, montane forest, wetlands, volcanic peaks, and Congo Basin rainforest
- The Albertine Rift — one of the world’s greatest biodiversity hotspots, running the length of Uganda’s western border

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
There is no wildlife encounter on earth quite like this. You descend into ancient forest, the canopy closing above you, tracking a mountain gorilla family through terrain that lives up to its name. Then — a branch cracks. A silverback emerges. And the world contracts to this single, thunderstruck moment.
With 20+ habituated gorilla families across four trekking sectors — Buhoma, Rushaga, Nkuringo, and Ruhija — Bwindi offers the most reliable gorilla encounters on the planet. The hour you spend with a gorilla family is the hour most of our guests describe as the single best experience of their lives.
Discover Bwindi
Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest
If gorillas are the profound encounter, chimpanzees are the exhilarating one. Chimps are fast, vocal, social, and impossibly human. They call to each other through the canopy. They groom, they fight, they play. And when they look directly at you — with that uncanny intelligence — the 98.7% DNA overlap is unmistakably real.
Kibale National Park holds Africa’s highest density of primates. Over 1,450 chimpanzees inhabit its 795km² of tropical rainforest alongside 12 other primate species. The Kanyanchu community is fully habituated — encounters here can last several hours as the group moves through its territory with complete indifference to observers.
Discover Kibale
Tree-Climbing Lions & Kazinga Channel Boat Safari
Queen Elizabeth National Park delivers two experiences found almost nowhere else on earth. In the Ishasha sector in the south, lion prides drape themselves across the horizontal branches of ancient fig trees — a learned behaviour passed between generations, shared globally only with Tanzania’s Lake Manyara lions.
Then there is the Kazinga Channel — a natural 40-kilometre waterway between Lakes George and Edward. The afternoon boat cruise here is East Africa’s finest water-based wildlife experience. Hundreds of hippos, Nile crocodiles, African fish eagles, and buffalo herds at the water’s edge — all in the extraordinary golden light of a Rift Valley sunset.
Discover Queen Elizabeth
Murchison Falls — The World’s Most Powerful Waterfall
The Victoria Nile forces itself through a 7-metre crack in the earth and detonates downward with a force that generates a permanent rainbow and a roar audible for kilometres. The Nile boat safari — 17 kilometres upstream from Paraa — is East Africa’s finest river wildlife experience. Hippos by the hundreds. Crocodiles on every sandbank. Then the falls themselves, growing louder with every river bend.
Above the falls, Uganda’s largest national park unfolds across 3,840km². Rothschild’s giraffes — among the world’s rarest large mammals, over 1,500 here — stride above the acacia canopy. Shoebill stork navigate the papyrus delta. And lions hunt the Buligi game circuit at dawn.
Discover Murchison FallsUganda — Africa’s Birding Capital
With 1,066 recorded bird species, Uganda holds more birds than all of Europe combined. From Congo Basin endemics in Semuliki to Albertine Rift montane specials in Bwindi, no country in Africa delivers such diversity in such a compact area.
One of Africa’s most prehistoric-looking and sought-after birds. Found in Murchison Falls’ papyrus swamps and Lake Victoria wetlands — a pilgrimage species for serious birders.
The jewel of Bwindi’s Albertine Rift endemics — a brilliant emerald bird found only in this ancient forest. One of Africa’s most sought-after species for world listers.
A Congo Basin endemic found only in Semuliki’s lowland forest in Uganda — one of the rarest and most difficult rails in Africa, accessible with specialist guiding.
Found only in the dry northeast of Uganda, in and around Kidepo Valley National Park. A regional endemic that draws birders to Uganda’s most remote frontier.
Best Time for a Uganda Safari
Uganda’s equatorial position means gorilla trekking and wildlife safaris are possible year-round. But two dry seasons offer optimal conditions for game drives and forest trekking.
The best conditions for gorilla trekking and game drives. Firm forest trails, concentrated savanna wildlife, and clear Rift Valley views. Book permits and accommodation 6–12 months ahead. The most popular window across all Uganda’s parks.
Uganda’s second-best window. Quieter than June–September with excellent conditions for both gorilla trekking and savanna game drives. The holiday period (Christmas–New Year) fills quickly — book early. Migratory birds at maximum diversity.
Light rains with reduced visitor numbers. Forest turns intensely green and beautiful. Gorilla encounters remain near-100% success — the gorillas don’t take rainy season off. Good rates across all lodges and camps. Birding at its peak diversity.
Heaviest rainfall but lowest rates and smallest crowds. Gorilla encounters remain reliable. The forest at its most vivid and botanically rich. Recommended for experienced safari travellers who want exclusivity. Best rates of the year across all Uganda.
