The Pearl of Africa

Why Uganda Is East Africa’s Most Extraordinary Safari Destination

Winston Churchill called Uganda “the Pearl of Africa” — and no superlative has ever been more accurate. Within a country roughly the size of the United Kingdom, Uganda packs a wildlife diversity that dwarfs most of the continent. Mountain gorillas and chimpanzees in ancient rainforests. Tree-climbing lions on Albertine Rift savannas. Over a thousand bird species in habitats ranging from tropical lowland to Afroalpine moorland.

What sets Uganda apart is intimacy. Unlike the vast, vehicle-dense parks of East Africa’s southern circuit, Uganda’s wildlife experiences are deliberately limited and profoundly personal. You sit within metres of a 200-kilogram silverback for one uninterrupted hour. You track chimpanzees through forest mist with a community that knows every individual by name. You watch Nile crocodiles from the deck of a boat on the Victoria Nile as Murchison Falls thunders a kilometre upstream.

  • Home to over 460 mountain gorillas — more than half the world’s entire population in Bwindi and Mgahinga
  • Africa’s highest primate diversity — 13 species in a single country, including chimpanzees, colobus, baboons, and pottos
  • 1,066 recorded bird species — more than all of Europe combined, making Uganda one of the world’s top birding destinations
  • Tree-climbing lions in Ishasha — a behaviour shared globally only with Tanzania’s Lake Manyara
  • The world’s most powerful waterfall (Murchison Falls) on the Victoria Nile — accessible by boat and foot
  • Year-round gorilla trekking with near-100% encounter success rates regardless of season
  • 10 national parks encompassing savanna, montane forest, wetlands, volcanic peaks, and Congo Basin rainforest
  • The Albertine Rift — one of the world’s greatest biodiversity hotspots, running the length of Uganda’s western border

Signature Experience

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

There is no wildlife encounter on earth quite like this. You descend into ancient forest, the canopy closing above you, tracking a mountain gorilla family through terrain that lives up to its name. Then — a branch cracks. A silverback emerges. And the world contracts to this single, thunderstruck moment.

With 20+ habituated gorilla families across four trekking sectors — Buhoma, Rushaga, Nkuringo, and Ruhija — Bwindi offers the most reliable gorilla encounters on the planet. The hour you spend with a gorilla family is the hour most of our guests describe as the single best experience of their lives.

Primate Encounters

Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest

If gorillas are the profound encounter, chimpanzees are the exhilarating one. Chimps are fast, vocal, social, and impossibly human. They call to each other through the canopy. They groom, they fight, they play. And when they look directly at you — with that uncanny intelligence — the 98.7% DNA overlap is unmistakably real.

Kibale National Park holds Africa’s highest density of primates. Over 1,450 chimpanzees inhabit its 795km² of tropical rainforest alongside 12 other primate species. The Kanyanchu community is fully habituated — encounters here can last several hours as the group moves through its territory with complete indifference to observers.

Tree-Climbing Lions & Kazinga Channel Boat Safari

Queen Elizabeth National Park delivers two experiences found almost nowhere else on earth. In the Ishasha sector in the south, lion prides drape themselves across the horizontal branches of ancient fig trees — a learned behaviour passed between generations, shared globally only with Tanzania’s Lake Manyara lions.

Then there is the Kazinga Channel — a natural 40-kilometre waterway between Lakes George and Edward. The afternoon boat cruise here is East Africa’s finest water-based wildlife experience. Hundreds of hippos, Nile crocodiles, African fish eagles, and buffalo herds at the water’s edge — all in the extraordinary golden light of a Rift Valley sunset.

Natural Wonders

Murchison Falls — The World’s Most Powerful Waterfall

The Victoria Nile forces itself through a 7-metre crack in the earth and detonates downward with a force that generates a permanent rainbow and a roar audible for kilometres. The Nile boat safari — 17 kilometres upstream from Paraa — is East Africa’s finest river wildlife experience. Hippos by the hundreds. Crocodiles on every sandbank. Then the falls themselves, growing louder with every river bend.

Above the falls, Uganda’s largest national park unfolds across 3,840km². Rothschild’s giraffes — among the world’s rarest large mammals, over 1,500 here — stride above the acacia canopy. Shoebill stork navigate the papyrus delta. And lions hunt the Buligi game circuit at dawn.

One of Africa’s most prehistoric-looking and sought-after birds. Found in Murchison Falls’ papyrus swamps and Lake Victoria wetlands — a pilgrimage species for serious birders.

African Green Broadbill

The jewel of Bwindi’s Albertine Rift endemics — a brilliant emerald bird found only in this ancient forest. One of Africa’s most sought-after species for world listers.

Nkulengu Rail

A Congo Basin endemic found only in Semuliki’s lowland forest in Uganda — one of the rarest and most difficult rails in Africa, accessible with specialist guiding.

Karamoja Apalis

Found only in the dry northeast of Uganda, in and around Kidepo Valley National Park. A regional endemic that draws birders to Uganda’s most remote frontier.

When to Visit

Best Time for a Uganda Safari

Uganda’s equatorial position means gorilla trekking and wildlife safaris are possible year-round. But two dry seasons offer optimal conditions for game drives and forest trekking.

★★★★★
June · July · August · September
Long Dry Season — Peak

The best conditions for gorilla trekking and game drives. Firm forest trails, concentrated savanna wildlife, and clear Rift Valley views. Book permits and accommodation 6–12 months ahead. The most popular window across all Uganda’s parks.

★★★★★
December · January · February
Short Dry Season — Excellent

Uganda’s second-best window. Quieter than June–September with excellent conditions for both gorilla trekking and savanna game drives. The holiday period (Christmas–New Year) fills quickly — book early. Migratory birds at maximum diversity.

October · November
Short Rains — Good Value

Light rains with reduced visitor numbers. Forest turns intensely green and beautiful. Gorilla encounters remain near-100% success — the gorillas don’t take rainy season off. Good rates across all lodges and camps. Birding at its peak diversity.

March · April · May
Long Rains — Adventure Season

Heaviest rainfall but lowest rates and smallest crowds. Gorilla encounters remain reliable. The forest at its most vivid and botanically rich. Recommended for experienced safari travellers who want exclusivity. Best rates of the year across all Uganda.

Frequently Asked Questions

Uganda Safari Questions Answered

How much does a Uganda gorilla trekking permit cost?
A Uganda gorilla trekking permit costs $800 USD per person for foreign non-residents, $700 for East African Community residents, and UGX 250,000 for Ugandan citizens. Permits are limited to 8 visitors per gorilla family per day across all habituated groups in Bwindi and Mgahinga. Apes & Wildlife Safaris secures permits on your behalf — contact us to begin the booking process as soon as possible, particularly for peak season travel (June–September and December–February).
What is the best time to visit Uganda for gorilla trekking?
Gorilla trekking in Uganda is possible and successful year-round — gorillas are tracked and found with near-100% success in all seasons. The most comfortable conditions occur during the two dry seasons: June to September (long dry season) and December to February (short dry season), when forest trails are firmer and the trekking is less physically demanding. The rainy season offers lower rates and fewer visitors, and many experienced travellers prefer the intensely green, atmospheric forest of April and May.
How fit do I need to be for gorilla trekking in Uganda?
Gorilla trekking in Uganda ranges from 30 minutes to 8 hours of trekking, depending on the gorilla family’s location on the day. The terrain in Bwindi is steep, dense, and often muddy — the name “impenetrable” is earned. Moderate fitness is required for most treks. Hiring a local porter (strongly recommended at $15–20) carries your pack and assists on difficult sections, making the trek accessible to most visitors over 15 years of age. The Buhoma sector is generally considered the most accessible for those with limited fitness.
Which is better — gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda?
Both countries offer extraordinary gorilla encounters, but they differ meaningfully. Uganda ($800 permit) is significantly less expensive than Rwanda ($1,500 permit) and offers more habituated gorilla families (20+ in Bwindi alone vs. 12 in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park). Uganda’s forest — Bwindi — is denser, more primeval, and more physically challenging, which many visitors find adds to the experience. Rwanda’s Volcanoes Park has a more manicured trekking infrastructure and combines naturally with Rwanda’s other tourist attractions. Many visitors combine both countries in a single trip — Apes & Wildlife Safaris specialises in exactly these cross-border gorilla itineraries.
Can I see gorillas and chimpanzees on the same Uganda trip?
Absolutely — and this combination is one of Uganda’s most popular safari experiences. Our 4-Day Gorilla and Chimpanzee Safari combines gorilla trekking in Bwindi with chimpanzee tracking in Kibale National Park, the world’s premier chimpanzee destination. Bwindi is in southwestern Uganda and Kibale is approximately 4–5 hours north — easily covered in a single itinerary with one overnight between parks. This “primate double” is available on multiple itineraries and can be extended to include game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Is Uganda safe to visit on safari?
Uganda is one of East Africa’s safest safari destinations for tourists. The national parks are well managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Kampala is a vibrant, functional capital with good tourist infrastructure. Remote parks like Kidepo Valley are served by charter flights that eliminate long overland travel. The main health precautions are yellow fever vaccination (mandatory) and malaria prophylaxis (strongly recommended). Apes & Wildlife Safaris provides comprehensive pre-trip health and safety briefings for all Uganda safari clients, and our guides carry first aid kits and emergency communications on all treks.
How many days do I need for a Uganda safari?
A minimum of 4–5 days allows for a focused gorilla trekking experience with transfer days built in. A week (7 days) is enough to combine gorilla trekking with game drives and chimpanzee tracking. For a comprehensive Uganda safari covering primates, savanna wildlife, birding, and cultural encounters across multiple parks, 10–14 days is ideal. Our safari packages range from 4 days to 17 days — and every itinerary is tailor-made to your specific interests, fitness, and budget.
What is Uganda’s most underrated wildlife experience?
Kidepo Valley National Park in Uganda’s extreme northeast is the country’s most underrated and spectacular wildlife destination. Entirely free of the crowds that visit the western parks, Kidepo is Uganda’s only park with cheetah — a species found nowhere else in Uganda. It also has ostriches, greater kudu, Karamoja apalis (a near-endemic bird), and 475 bird species. The Karamajong cultural experience bordering the park is among the most authentic in East Africa. Almost all visitors fly in by charter aircraft — and almost all rank Kidepo among the finest safari experiences of their lives.
