Africa’s Last True Wilderness

Where the Wilderness Still Belongs to Itself

Kidepo Valley National Park is Uganda’s best-kept safari secret and among Africa’s most extraordinary wilderness experiences. Set in the extreme northeast against the borders of South Sudan and Kenya, this vast park of semi-arid savanna, rocky escarpments, and seasonal rivers is so remote that most Ugandans have never visited. Those who make the journey find a landscape and wildlife community unlike anything else in East Africa.

Kidepo is Uganda’s only park with cheetah — a fact alone that justifies the journey. Lion prides, leopards, and spotted hyenas are reliably encountered. The ostrich, found nowhere else in Uganda, stalks the open plains. Greater kudu navigate rocky slopes with improbable elegance. And 475 bird species include several found only in this dry northeastern corner of the country.

The Karamajong — one of East Africa’s last traditional pastoralist cultures — inhabit the lands bordering Kidepo. Cultural visits offer insight into a way of life unchanged for centuries. Apes & Wildlife Safaris arranges the charter flight, camp, and complete Kidepo experience for the truly adventurous traveller.

⚠️ Must Know Before You Go

Kidepo is extremely remote — medical evacuation travel insurance is essential. Pack for high temperatures and strong sun. July–August is peak; fly-in visits are strongly recommended. Anti-malaria precautions required.

Wildlife & Natural Highlights

01 — Cheetah

Uganda’s Only Cheetah

Kidepo is the only park in Uganda where cheetah survive. The Narus Valley’s open plains — ideal cheetah hunting terrain — offer the best morning sightings. A Kidepo cheetah encounter is one of Uganda’s rarest and most treasured wildlife experiences.

02 — Predators

Lions, Leopards & Hyenas

The Narus Valley supports a thriving predator community. Lion prides hunt at dawn. Leopards appear near rocky outcrops. Spotted hyenas are the most commonly encountered large predator. Bat-eared fox emerge at dusk.

03 — Unique Species

Ostriches & Greater Kudu

Ostrich — found nowhere else in Uganda — stride the open Kidepo plains. The greater kudu, with its spectacular spiral horns, navigates rocky escarpments with breathtaking agility. Aardwolf and bat-eared fox are also uniquely present.

04 — Plains Game

Oryx, Eland & Zebra

Eland, Burchell’s zebra, Beisa oryx, Bright’s gazelle, Jackson’s hartebeest, and topi share the Narus Valley with the resident predators. The diversity of species — many found nowhere else in Uganda — creates Kenyan-quality game drive diversity.

05 — Avifauna

475 Birds Including Northeast Endemics

Karamoja apalis (found only in this region), Abyssinian roller, fox kestrel, secretary bird, and Abyssinian ground hornbill are among Kidepo’s ornithological highlights unavailable in western Uganda.

06 — Culture

Karamajong Manyattas

The Karamajong — semi-nomadic cattle herders maintaining their culture for centuries — live in traditional manyatta homesteads adjacent to the park. A cultural visit offers extraordinary insight into one of East Africa’s last traditional pastoralist communities.

Valley Systems

Key Areas & Experiences

Kidepo’s two primary valleys offer distinct wildlife environments. The Narus Valley is the year-round wildlife hub; the remote Kidepo Valley offers unparalleled solitude in the dry season.

Narus Valley
🦁 Prime Wildlife Zone

The perennial water sources make Narus Kidepo’s year-round wildlife concentration zone. Cheetah, lion, leopard, elephant, zebra, oryx, and ostrich regularly encountered. Dawn drives on this circuit are among Uganda’s finest safari experiences.

Kidepo Valley
🌵 Remote Wilderness Zone

The seasonal Kidepo River valley, accessible only in dry season, offers true wilderness. Few tourists, minimal infrastructure, and a primordial landscape. Specialist dry-country antelope species dominate.

Karamoja Cultural Zone
🏛️ Community Interface

Guided visits to Karamajong manyattas — cattle herding demonstrations, traditional dance, manyatta construction, and the visual theatre of Karamajong warriors in ceremonial dress. Unforgettable.

Lomej Hills
🦅 Birding Escarpments

The rocky Lomej Hills are prime habitat for the Karamoja apalis, fox kestrel, and other escarpment specialists unavailable on the valley floor. Guided birding walks yield unique northeast Uganda species.

Essential Tips for Kidepo Valley National Park

01

Fly, Don’t Drive

The 10–12 hour road from Kampala is an expedition. Charter flights take 1.5 hours. Apes & Wildlife Safaris coordinates all Kidepo charter arrangements.

02

Stay a Minimum of 3 Nights

Kidepo rewards time. Two full game drive days deliver cheetah, cultural visits, and birding. One night barely scratches the surface.

03

Dawn Drive in Narus Valley

Predators returning from night hunts and prey animals moving toward water at dawn — this is Kidepo at its most spectacular.

04

Visit a Karamajong Manyatta

The cultural dimension is inseparable from Kidepo. These are people who have coexisted with lions and cheetahs for generations.

05

Pack for Heat and Dust

Lighter and hotter than Uganda’s western parks. High-SPF sunscreen and large water bottles essential. Dust means camera protection.

06

Look for Bat-Eared Fox at Dusk

These charming large-eared predators emerge at dusk to forage on the valley floor. A Kidepo-specific sighting that surprises many guests.
