Lake Mburo National Park
Zebras graze within 240km of Kampala. Hippos crowd the lakeshore at sunset. Lake Mburo is Uganda’s intimate gem — rich in acacias, wildlife, and the unhurried pace of a true lake safari.
Zebras at the Waterhole, Hippos at Sunset
Lake Mburo is Uganda’s smallest and most accessible national park — and one of its most rewarding. Just 3.5 hours from Kampala, this compact ecosystem of acacia woodland, wetland, and five interlinked lakes is the only place in Uganda where Burchell’s zebra can be seen wild, and one of the few national parks where you can walk, cycle, or ride horseback without a ranger escort.
The park’s intimacy is its greatest asset. Boat safaris on Lake Mburo deliver sunset views of hundreds of hippos. Walking safaris through acacia woodland yield close encounters with impala, topi, eland — and the occasional leopard. Lake Mburo holds Uganda’s highest impala density. For travellers heading between Kampala and the western parks, it is the perfect overnight stopover.
Apes & Wildlife Safaris routinely incorporates a Mburo night into Uganda itineraries — the gentle, wildlife-rich introduction to the country’s wilder west.
Boat safari on Lake Mburo approximately $25 per person per hour. Walking safari ranger fee $15–20. Horseback safari arranged through park-approved operators. All bookable through Apes & Wildlife Safaris.
Lake Mburo is malaria-endemic — prophylaxis recommended. Excellent for self-drive visitors. No large cats on primary game drives, but the extraordinary density of zebras, impalas, and hippos more than compensates. The boat trip at sunset is unmissable.
Wildlife & Natural Highlights
Uganda’s Only Zebra Population
Burchell’s zebra, numbering over 2,000, make Lake Mburo the only wild zebra habitat in Uganda. Their presence alongside impala, topi, and eland lends a Serengeti-in-miniature quality to game drives.
Abundant Lake Wildlife
Lake Mburo’s interconnected lakes support large hippo populations easily viewed from the boat safari. Nile crocodiles are common, African fish eagles perch in waterside trees, and yellow-billed storks wade the shallows.
Uganda’s Highest Impala Density
The graceful impala exists here in its thousands, sharing acacia woodland with topi, oribi, duiker, reedbuck, and the massive eland — Africa’s largest antelope. Few parks in East Africa offer such intimate antelope encounters.
Leopard & Spotted Hyena
Leopards are present and occasionally seen near rocky outcrops. Spotted hyenas are encountered at dusk. The absence of lions makes Lake Mburo one of Uganda’s safest walking safari parks.
315 Bird Species
African finfoot, bare-faced go-away bird, black-billed barbet, and papyrus canary are among the sought-after species. The combination of acacia woodland, wetland, and open grassland creates exceptional birding diversity.
Horseback Safari
One of East Africa’s only national parks offering horseback safaris — riding through zebra and impala herds at horse level, approaching wildlife more closely than any vehicle. An experience that exists almost nowhere else in the region.
Key Areas & Experiences
Lake Mburo is small enough to explore comprehensively in 24–48 hours. Game drive, boat safari, and walking or horseback safari deliver the full range of this extraordinary park’s wildlife.
The Kazuma and Rwonyo area offer the primary game drive circuit. Zebra herds, impala, warthog, and occasional leopard are encountered on the compact road network fully driveable in 3–4 hours.
1–2 hour boat safaris from the Rwonyo jetty explore the lakeshore — hippos at close range, crocodiles, fish eagles, and diverse water birds. Sunset boat safaris are particularly spectacular.
Guided walks through acacia woodland where the absence of lions makes close encounters with impala and zebra genuinely possible at ground level. Rangers carry rifles as a precaution for buffalo.
Riding through herds of zebra and impala at horse level is Lake Mburo’s signature. Horses are accustomed to wildlife, allowing approaches vehicles cannot achieve. Suitable for all confident riders.
Best Time to Visit Lake Mburo National Park
Short grass and water concentration maximise wildlife visibility. Boat safari most productive as hippos crowd shrinking lake margins.
Excellent visibility and comfortable temperatures. Popular stopover window between Kampala and the western parks.
Light rains keep landscape green without impacting game viewing. Bird diversity peaks as migrants arrive.
Lush green scenery. Some tracks muddy but the compact network is generally accessible with 4WD. Lowest rates of year.
Curated Safaris Including Lake
Every Apes & Wildlife Safaris itinerary is tailor-made for your group and can be customised to include Lake Mburo National Park alongside other parks across Uganda.
