Where Three Countries Meet

Gorillas and Golden Monkeys Beneath Volcanic Peaks

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest and most scenically spectacular national park. Pressed against the borders of Rwanda and DR Congo, Mgahinga protects Uganda’s portion of the Virunga Volcanic Massif — three ancient extinct volcanoes draped in Afromontane forest.

Mgahinga’s signature exclusive is its habituated golden monkey group — one of only two places in the world where you can trek these brilliant orange-and-black primates in their natural bamboo forest. Combined with mountain gorilla trekking and volcano summit hikes that let you stand simultaneously in three countries, Mgahinga is one of Africa’s most unique safari destinations.

The park pairs naturally with Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park for a cross-border primate itinerary. Apes & Wildlife Safaris manages all cross-border logistics and permits.

🎫 Fees & Permits
$800
Gorilla Permit · Per person · Foreign non-resident

Golden monkey trekking permits: $100 per person. Volcano hiking fees: $35–80 depending on route. Only one gorilla group (Nyakagezi family) is habituated — confirm availability before travel as the group occasionally crosses into Rwanda. Book through Apes & Wildlife Safaris.

⚠️ Must Know Before You Go

Only one gorilla family is habituated in Mgahinga. Altitude on volcano summits exceeds 4,000m — acclimatisation is essential. Pack warm layers regardless of season — temperatures drop sharply at elevation. The Batwa cultural experience is one of Mgahinga’s most powerful offerings.

Wildlife & Natural Highlights

01 — Mountain Gorillas

Nyakagezi Family

The Nyakagezi gorilla family ranges across Mgahinga’s mid-elevation forest slopes. This family of approximately 10 individuals includes multiple silverbacks and is known for its relaxed tolerance of observers. Encounters are deeply intimate.

02 — Golden Monkeys

Bamboo Forest Endemic

Uganda’s only habituated golden monkey group lives in Mgahinga’s bamboo zone. These dazzlingly coloured primates — vivid orange-gold against black — are found only in the Virunga region and are accessible nowhere else in Uganda.

03 — Volcanic Avifauna

Albertine Rift Endemics

Rwenzori turaco, Kivu ground thrush, and Grauer’s rush warbler are among the Albertine Rift endemics in Mgahinga’s forest. Volcanic slope specialists found nowhere in lowland Uganda.

04 — Forest Mammals

Elephants & Buffalo

Forest elephants and buffalo move through Mgahinga’s forest corridors. Golden jackal and spotted hyena roam the higher reaches. Encounters during trekking are possible — guides are expert at wildlife management.

05 — Volcano Summits

Three Peaks, Three Countries

Mounts Muhabura (4,127m), Gahinga (3,474m), and Sabinyo (3,645m) offer guided summit hikes. The Sabinyo ridge walk straddles Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo simultaneously — a uniquely geographic African experience.

06 — Cultural Heritage

Batwa Forest Pygmies

The Batwa — Uganda’s original forest inhabitants — conduct cultural experiences at Mgahinga offering genuine insight into a way of life unchanged for centuries. A profound complement to the wildlife trekking experience.

Key Experiences

Key Areas & Experiences

Mgahinga’s activities radiate from a single base. Most visitors combine gorilla trekking, golden monkey trekking, and a volcano hike across 2–3 days.

Gorilla Trekking Zone
🦍 Mountain Gorilla Territory

Treks begin from Ntebeko park headquarters and take 2–6 hours depending on the Nyakagezi family’s position. The one-hour encounter is intense and unforgettable.

Golden Monkey Trail
🐒 Bamboo Forest Zone

Golden monkey trekking follows the habituated group through the bamboo belt. The monkeys are acrobatic, fast, and brilliantly coloured — active photographers always find the hour too short.

Volcano Summits
🌋 High Altitude Hiking

Sabinyo is the most popular summit — its ridge walk delivers the unique experience of standing in three countries at once. Muhabura summit offers crater lake views. Gahinga takes approximately 5 hours return.

Batwa Cultural Trail
🏛️ Indigenous Heritage

A guided cultural immersion with Uganda’s original forest inhabitants — fire-making, honey harvesting, traditional medicine, and forest tracking. Moving and essential.

Insider Knowledge

Essential Tips for Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

01

Confirm Gorilla Group Location

The Nyakagezi family occasionally crosses into Rwanda. Apes & Wildlife Safaris tracks the family and pivots to Rwanda if needed.

02

Double Your Trekking in One Day

Book gorilla trekking (morning) and golden monkey trekking (afternoon) in a single Mgahinga day. This combination is uniquely possible only here.

03

Acclimatise Before Summit Hikes

Spending a night at Mgahinga before volcano summits significantly reduces altitude effects above 3,500m.

04

Combine with Rwanda Volcanoes

Mgahinga and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park share the Virunga Massif. A cross-border itinerary is one of our most distinctive Africa programmes.

05

Hire a Local Porter

The volcanic terrain is steep and slippery. Porters here are often former Batwa community members with unparalleled forest awareness.

06

Don’t Skip the Batwa Experience

The Batwa cultural trail adds a dimension that no wildlife encounter alone can provide. It is Mgahinga’s hidden treasure.
