Arusha National Park
Giraffes in the shadow of Mount Meru. Colobus in ancient forest. Flamingos on crater lakes. Walking safaris on foot. Kilimanjaro views. Arusha National Park — Tanzania’s accessible gem.
Giraffes and Colobus in the Shadow of Mount Meru
Arusha National Park is Tanzania’s most accessible and underappreciated northern circuit park — just 45 minutes from Arusha town, encompassing an extraordinary range of landscapes from montane rainforest and crater lakes to the slopes of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second highest mountain at 4,566m.
The park is famous for its unusually confiding giraffes — habituated at closer range than anywhere else in Tanzania — and its resident black-and-white colobus troops in the montane forest. The Momella Lakes attract flamingos. Crucially, Arusha is one of very few Tanzania parks where walking safaris are officially permitted on foot alongside giraffe, zebra, and waterbuck — a unique experience unavailable in any other major northern Tanzania park.
Mount Meru offers a superb 3–4 day trekking circuit providing excellent acclimatisation for Kilimanjaro aspirants. Apes & Wildlife Safaris incorporates Arusha National Park into arrival-day programmes and pre-Kilimanjaro itineraries.
Walking safari guide fees approximately $25. Mount Meru trekking permits additional. All through Apes & Wildlife Safaris.
No lions in Arusha National Park — making walking safaris genuinely safe on foot. Buffalo are present and should be given space. The park is compact — fully explorable in a half day to full day. Perfect as a Tanzania arrival-day activity.
Wildlife & Natural Highlights
Masai Giraffe on Foot
Habituated at closer range than anywhere else in Tanzania. Walking among giraffes on foot — approaching within 20 metres of these gentle giants — is one of the park’s most distinctive and memorable experiences.
Black-and-White Colobus
Large troops inhabit the montane forest. Their dramatic colouring and loud territorial calls make them one of Africa’s most visually striking primates. Easily encountered on guided forest walks.
Momella Lakes & Flamingos
The alkaline Momella Lakes attract flamingos, pelicans, and diverse water birds against the backdrop of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro on clear days — one of Tanzania’s finest scenic wildlife settings.
Mount Meru — 4,566m
Tanzania’s second highest summit is accessible on a 3–4 day trek. Provides the closest possible view of Kilimanjaro from the west and is superb acclimatisation for Kilimanjaro aspirants.
Walking Safaris
One of very few Tanzania parks where walking safaris are officially permitted. Guided walks approaching giraffes, zebra, and waterbuck on foot delivers intimacy impossible from a vehicle.
Kilimanjaro Views
On clear mornings, Kilimanjaro’s glaciers are visible from the Momella Lakes — the mountain’s rarely photographed western profile. Meru and Kili in a single frame is exceptional photography.
