Gombe National Park
Jane Goodall’s forest. The world’s most famous chimpanzees by name and history. Lake Tanganyika below. Gombe is where modern primatology began — and where no other encounter compares.
The World’s Most Famous Chimpanzees, Lake Tanganyika at Sunset
Gombe National Park is one of the world’s most significant wildlife research sites — a tiny 52km² strip of forest on eastern Lake Tanganyika where Jane Goodall began her landmark chimpanzee research in 1960. Over 60 years later, the research continues under the Jane Goodall Institute, making Gombe’s chimpanzee community the most studied group of wild primates in scientific history.
Every chimpanzee encounter here carries extraordinary depth that no other primate trekking destination can match. The animals have individual names, documented life histories spanning decades, and complex relationships informing our understanding of human evolution. Your guide can tell you about each individual encountered — not just their species but their personalities, family bonds, and stories across generations.
Gombe also sits on the shores of Lake Tanganyika — Africa’s deepest lake and one of the world’s most biodiverse freshwater ecosystems. Swimming among extraordinary endemic cichlid fish completes a uniquely multi-dimensional safari. Apes & Wildlife Safaris arranges complete Gombe itineraries from Kigoma.
Chimpanzee trekking permit approximately $100 per person per day. Boat from Kigoma approximately $50–100 return. All through Apes & Wildlife Safaris.
Gombe is accessible only by boat from Kigoma (1 hour). The forest terrain is steep and trekking is physically demanding. Chimpanzees are habituated but wild — follow all guide instructions carefully. Lake swimming is generally safe away from hippo activity areas.
Wildlife & Natural Highlights
Jane Goodall’s Chimpanzees
Individual names and documented histories spanning 60+ years. Every encounter carries the weight of one of science’s great ongoing stories — these are known characters in the world’s longest-running primatology study.
Lake Tanganyika
Crystal-clear waters of Africa’s deepest lake, accessible for swimming and snorkelling among the lake’s extraordinary endemic cichlid fish — found nowhere else in the world.
Long-Studied Baboon Troops
Lakeshore baboon troops also named and individually known since the 1960s. Complex social dynamics documented across generations of continuous research.
Forest Birds
200+ species including Ross’s turaco, African crowned eagle, and various kingfishers along the forest streams. The forest dawn chorus at Gombe is extraordinary.
Red-Tailed Monkeys
Inhabit the forest alongside the chimpanzees. Interactions between the two primate species — including documented chimpanzee hunting of red-tailed monkeys — extensively studied at Gombe.
Kasakela Valley Research Heritage
Where Jane Goodall first made contact with chimpanzees in 1960 — one of the world’s most historically significant scientific sites. Walking this valley adds 60+ years of primatological discovery to each step.
