Akagera National Park
Rwanda’s only savanna park. Lions reintroduced in 2015. Black rhinos back in 2017. Elephants at the papyrus lakes. Akagera is one of Africa’s most extraordinary conservation comeback stories.
Lions, Rhinos, and Big Five Returned to the Land of a Thousand Hills
Akagera National Park is one of Africa’s most extraordinary conservation success stories. After the 1994 genocide, the park was encroached and wildlife devastated — lions locally extinct, rhinos eliminated. Under African Parks management since 2010, lions were reintroduced in 2015 from South Africa and Kenya, black rhinos in 2017, and a functioning Big Five ecosystem has been restored to Rwanda.
The park’s combination of open savanna, acacia woodland, and 12 interconnected papyrus lakes creates a landscape entirely unlike Rwanda’s gorilla country. Hippo-studded lakes, elephant herds at the water’s edge, growing lion prides, and the newly established rhino population — all against the backdrop of one of Africa’s most inspiring conservation transformations — make Akagera one of the continent’s most remarkable park visits.
Apes & Wildlife Safaris combines Akagera with Volcanoes National Park for the complete Rwanda safari — gorillas in the northwest, savanna Big Five in the east.
Vehicle fees additional. Night game drives available. Lake Ihema boat safari approximately $30 per person. All through Apes & Wildlife Safaris.
Lions are reintroduced and still establishing territories — sightings increasingly regular but not as certain as established parks. Black rhinos present in small growing numbers requiring patient expert guidance. Malaria prophylaxis recommended.
Wildlife & Natural Highlights
Reintroduced Lions
Absent 15 years, reintroduced in 2015 — every lion sighting carries the extraordinary weight of a species returned to land it lost. The growing pride is regularly encountered on open savanna game drives.
Black Rhino Conservation
Reintroduced in 2017 in one of Africa’s most important current conservation programmes. The growing population means encounters — while requiring expert guidance — are increasingly possible.
Elephants at the Lakes
Large elephant herds regularly encountered at the lake shores and in acacia woodland. The lakeside setting — often with hippos in the same frame — creates uniquely beautiful wildlife photography.
Lake Ihema Boat Safari
Akagera’s 12 interconnected papyrus lakes support large hippo populations. The Lake Ihema boat safari delivers close hippo encounters, crocodile sightings, and extraordinary water birds including the shoebill stork.
Shoebill Stork
Akagera’s papyrus swamps are one of Africa’s most accessible shoebill stork habitats. Specialist morning boat excursions deliver encounters with this extraordinary prehistoric-looking bird.
Avifauna — 500+ Species
Shoebill stork, Africa’s largest concentration of papyrus gonolek, and 500+ total species make Akagera Rwanda’s premier birding destination — far more accessible than the mountain forests.
