Akagera National Park is one of Africa’s most extraordinary conservation success stories. After the 1994 genocide, the park was encroached and wildlife devastated — lions locally extinct, rhinos eliminated. Under African Parks management since 2010, lions were reintroduced in 2015 from South Africa and Kenya, black rhinos in 2017, and a functioning Big Five ecosystem has been restored to Rwanda.
The park’s combination of open savanna, acacia woodland, and 12 interconnected papyrus lakes creates a landscape entirely unlike Rwanda’s gorilla country.
