The World’s Most Famous Chimpanzees, Lake Tanganyika at Sunset

Gombe National Park is one of the world’s most significant wildlife research sites — a tiny 52km² strip of forest on eastern Lake Tanganyika where Jane Goodall began her landmark chimpanzee research in 1960. Over 60 years later, the research continues under the Jane Goodall Institute, making Gombe’s chimpanzee community the most studied group of wild primates in scientific history.

Every chimpanzee encounter here carries extraordinary depth that no other primate trekking destination can match. The animals have individual names, documented life histories spanning decades, and complex relationships informing our understanding of human evolution. Your guide can tell you about each individual encountered — not just their species but their personalities, family bonds, and stories across generations.

Gombe also sits on the shores of Lake Tanganyika — Africa’s deepest lake and one of the world’s most biodiverse freshwater ecosystems. Swimming among extraordinary endemic cichlid fish completes a uniquely multi-dimensional safari. Apes & Wildlife Safaris arranges complete Gombe itineraries from Kigoma.

🎫 Fees & Permits
$100
Park Entry Fee · Per person per day

Chimpanzee trekking permit approximately $100 per person per day. Boat from Kigoma approximately $50–100 return. All through Apes & Wildlife Safaris.

⚠️ Must Know Before You Go

Gombe is accessible only by boat from Kigoma (1 hour). The forest terrain is steep and trekking is physically demanding. Chimpanzees are habituated but wild — follow all guide instructions carefully. Lake swimming is generally safe away from hippo activity areas.
