Hell’s Gate National Park
The only park in Kenya where you cycle among zebras, walk with giraffes, and hike through the gorge that inspired The Lion King. Wild Africa on foot.
Cycling Among Zebras, Walking Through The Lion King’s Landscape
Hell’s Gate National Park is unique in all of Kenya — the only park where visitors are actively encouraged to walk, cycle, and hike among the wildlife without a vehicle or ranger escort. Zebra, giraffe, buffalo, eland, and Thomson’s gazelle can be approached closely on bicycle, creating safari encounters of an intimacy that no vehicle can replicate.
The dramatic volcanic landscape — towering basalt columns, steam vents, and the deep gorges of Ol Njorowa — inspired the Pride Rock scenery in Disney’s The Lion King. Fischer’s Tower, a 25-metre freestanding basalt column, and the Ol Njorowa Gorge walk are both Kenya’s finest short hiking experiences.
Hell’s Gate is perfect as a day trip from Lake Naivasha or Nairobi, combining naturally with Lake Nakuru. Apes & Wildlife Safaris incorporates Hell’s Gate into Rift Valley circuit itineraries.
Bicycle hire at gate approximately $7–12 per day. Guided gorge walk approximately $10 per person. Rock climbing guide fees approximately $25–40. All bookable through Apes & Wildlife Safaris.
Hell’s Gate has no lions or elephants — making the entire park safe for walking and cycling. Buffalo are present and should be given space. The gorge walk involves easy scrambling — wear closed-toe shoes. Bring water and sunscreen — the Rift Valley floor is hot.
Wildlife & Natural Highlights
Africa’s Only Wildlife Cycling Experience
Hell’s Gate is Kenya’s only park where you can cycle among wildlife. The 22km main circuit passes zebra, giraffe, eland, and kongoni at bicycle distance — intimate proximity impossible in any other Kenyan park.
The Lion King’s Landscape
The 15-metre-deep Ol Njorowa Gorge is a dramatic 3km walk through red-and-grey volcanic rock, geothermal pools, and natural rock arches. This landscape directly inspired The Lion King’s Pride Rock scenery.
Basalt Climbing Column
The 25-metre freestanding basalt column is one of Kenya’s most photographed geological features and a legitimate rock climbing destination with routes of varying difficulty.
Active Volcanic Landscape
Hell’s Gate sits above one of the world’s most productive geothermal fields. Steam vents, boiling mud pools, and hot springs make the landscape geologically alive in a way unlike any other Kenya park.
Giraffe, Zebra & Buffalo at Walking Distance
Masai giraffe, Burchell’s zebra, Cape buffalo, eland, and gazelle inhabit the park. The absence of lion and elephant makes the entire park walkable — an extraordinary freedom unmatched in East Africa.
Lammergeier & Cliff Raptors
Hell’s Gate’s cliff faces host Rüppell’s griffin vulture, augur buzzard, and the rare lammergeier (bearded vulture). Egyptian vulture, lanner falcon, and African kestrel are regularly encountered.
Key Areas & Experiences
Hell’s Gate’s main activities divide between the bicycle circuit, the Ol Njorowa Gorge walk, and the geothermal features area. A full day combines all three.
The main circuit cycled in 3–4 hours at a comfortable pace, passing all major wildlife areas, Fischer’s Tower, and the gorge entrance.
A 3km guided walk through the dramatic gorge — narrow canyon walls, geothermal pools, and rock scrambles. 2–3 hours. The most dramatic walking experience in the Rift Valley.
Legitimate multi-pitch rock climbs with routes of varying difficulty. Certified local guides arranged through Apes & Wildlife Safaris.
15 minutes from the park — hippo boat safari and Crescent Island walking safari create the perfect full-day Rift Valley combination with Hell’s Gate.

Essential Tips for Hell’s Gate National Park
Cycle the Full 22km Circuit
Renting bicycles and cycling the full circuit among giraffe and zebra is Hell’s Gate’s signature experience. Allow 4 hours for a relaxed pace.
Do the Gorge Walk
The Ol Njorowa Gorge walk is Kenya’s finest short canyon experience. The Lion King connection alone justifies the 2-hour walk.
Combine with Lake Naivasha
Hell’s Gate and Lake Naivasha (hippo boat safari and Crescent Island) are 15 minutes apart and perfectly complement each other into a full Rift Valley day.
Go Early to Avoid Midday Heat
The Rift Valley floor is hot by 11am. Arrive before 7:30am for the coolest cycling and best wildlife activity.
Bring a Picnic
No restaurant inside the park. A packed picnic at Fischer’s Tower or along the gorge is one of Kenya’s most atmospheric outdoor lunches.
Rock Climb Fischer’s Tower
For travellers with experience, Fischer’s Tower is a genuine multi-pitch climb. Arrange a guide through Apes & Wildlife Safaris in advance.
