Chimpanzees, 400-Strong Colobus Troops, and a Canopy Walkway 60 Metres High

Nyungwe National Park is one of Africa’s oldest and most significant tropical forests — a 1,019km² ancient montane rainforest in southwestern Rwanda that has remained continuously forested since the last Ice Age. This evolutionary continuity has produced extraordinary biodiversity: 13 primate species, over 300 bird species, and some of Africa’s richest botanical communities.

Nyungwe hosts habituated chimpanzees and the remarkable Angolan colobus, which forms mixed-species troops of up to 400 individuals — the largest primate groups in Africa. The park’s canopy walkway, a 160-metre suspension bridge 60 metres above the forest floor, delivers a bird’s-eye perspective on the canopy that transforms the wildlife experience entirely.

Our 14-Day Rwanda–Uganda Birding Safari covers Nyungwe’s extraordinary Albertine Rift endemic birds in depth. Contact Apes & Wildlife Safaris to plan your Rwanda forest circuit.

🎫 Fees & Permits
$40
Park Entry Fee · Per person per day

Chimpanzee trekking approximately $90–120. Canopy walkway approximately $60. Colobus trek approximately $50. All through Apes & Wildlife Safaris.

⚠️ Must Know Before You Go

Cool and frequently wet — pack warm, waterproof layers regardless of season. Forest altitude (1,600–2,950m) means genuinely cold nights. Chimpanzee trekking is demanding on steep terrain. Leeches present during wet season months.

Wildlife & Natural Highlights

01 — Wildlife

Habituated Chimpanzees

Rwanda’s habituated chimpanzee group in Cyamudongo forest. Fully habituated, with prolonged close encounters in cool mist-draped montane forest completely unlike any other chimpanzee trekking destination.

02 — Wildlife

400-Strong Colobus Troops

Angolan colobus forming troops of up to 400 individuals — the largest recorded primate groups in Africa. Watching this enormous black-and-white mass move through the canopy is genuinely astonishing.

03 — Wildlife

Forest Canopy Walkway

The 160-metre suspension bridge at 60m height delivers the forest from above — birds, butterflies, and the scale of the ancient canopy visible in a completely new perspective.

04 — Wildlife

30+ Albertine Rift Endemic Birds

Rwenzori turaco, Grauer’s rush warbler, red-collared mountain babbler, and African green broadbill are priority targets. The forest at dawn delivers one of East Africa’s finest bird chorus experiences.

05 — Wildlife

13 Primate Species

Red-tailed monkey, L’Hoest’s monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey, and olive baboon alongside the chimpanzees. A single forest walk can yield 5–6 primate species — highest diversity in any East African forest.

06 — Wildlife

Ancient Forest Ecosystem

Over 200 tree species including 25 endemic to Nyungwe. Continuously forested for at least 25,000 years — walking here is walking through deep evolutionary time in one of Africa’s most ancient living ecosystems.
