Volcanoes National Park
The Virunga volcanoes. Dian Fossey’s gorillas. A silverback parting the forest mist. Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is Africa’s most emotionally charged wildlife destination.
Mountain Gorillas in the Virunga Mist, Africa’s Most Moving Wildlife Encounter
Volcanoes National Park in northwest Rwanda is Africa’s most celebrated gorilla trekking destination — the legendary landscape where Dian Fossey dedicated her life to protecting mountain gorillas. The park encompasses five Virunga volcanoes draped in Afromontane forest, bamboo, and subalpine heath, sheltering more than 10 habituated gorilla families.
Rwanda’s gorilla permit at $1,500 per person is consistently rated the most valuable wildlife experience on earth by those who have completed it. The one-hour encounter with a gorilla family — sitting metres from a silverback, watching infants play, observing the complex social dynamics of humanity’s closest relatives — is genuinely life-changing in a way that most visitors struggle to articulate afterward.
Beyond gorillas, the park offers golden monkey trekking, volcano hikes including the Bisoke crater lake, and the extraordinary Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund research centre. Our 14-Day Rwanda–Uganda Birding Safari covers the Virunga’s extraordinary wildlife and birding.
Book 6–12 months ahead — one of the most coveted permits in Africa. Golden monkey trekking $100. Volcano hiking $75–125. All through Apes & Wildlife Safaris.
Minimum age 15 for gorilla trekking. If you show cold or flu symptoms you will be turned away — gorillas are extremely susceptible to human disease. Pack waterproof layers, sturdy boots, and gardening gloves for dense vegetation. A porter ($15) is strongly recommended on the steep volcanic slopes.
Wildlife & Natural Highlights
Mountain Gorillas
10+ habituated families, strictly limited to 8 visitors per group per day. Rwanda’s gorilla permit is consistently rated the most valuable wildlife experience on earth. One hour with a gorilla family is life-changing.
Dian Fossey Legacy
The Karisoke Research Centre, established in 1967, continues its work within the park. Guided visits to the centre and Fossey’s grave add a deeply moving historical and conservation dimension to the gorilla experience.
Golden Monkeys
The park’s habituated golden monkey treks deliver one-hour encounters with these brilliantly coloured primates in the volcanic bamboo zone. A morning golden monkey trek perfectly complements an afternoon gorilla encounter.
Volcano Hikes
All five Virunga volcanoes offer guided summit hikes. Bisoke’s crater lake (3,711m) is the most popular day hike. Karisimbi (4,507m) requires an overnight camp. Each summit delivers views across Rwanda, Uganda, and Congo.
Albertine Rift Endemic Birds
25+ endemic species including Rwenzori turaco, handsome francolin, and Grauer’s rush warbler. The park is a key destination on our Rwanda–Uganda birding circuit.
Kigali Gateway
Rwanda’s remarkable capital — 2.5 hours from the park — with the Kigali Genocide Memorial, vibrant contemporary art and food scene, and the city’s extraordinary transformation making it an essential itinerary element.
