Zebra Migration Across Salt Pans, Meerkats at Sunrise on an Infinite White Horizon

The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park protects one of the world’s largest salt pan complexes — the remnant of an ancient super-lake that once covered much of northern Botswana. In the dry season, the bleached white pans stretch to the horizon in every direction. In the wet season, they fill with water, attracting up to a million flamingos.

The Boteti River drives one of Africa’s great wildlife migrations — over 25,000 zebra moving from the dry pans to the river and back in a seasonal rhythm. Makgadikgadi is also one of the only places in southern Africa where habituated meerkat groups can be encountered at sunrise — emerging from their burrows to warm in first light, standing sentinel while you sit beside them on the pan.

Apes & Wildlife Safaris combines the Makgadikgadi with Chobe and the Okavango Delta for the complete northern Botswana circuit.

🎫 Fees & Permits
$15
Park Entry Fee · Per person per day

Meerkat experience approximately $50 per person. Quad bike pans excursion approximately $80. All through Apes & Wildlife Safaris.

⚠️ Must Know Before You Go

The pans are extremely remote — quad bikes or 4WD essential for pan exploration. May–October delivers zebra and predators at the Boteti River. November–April delivers flamingos and the extraordinary flooded pan landscape.
