Black-Maned Lions on Red Dunes, Raptors Soaring the Southern Kalahari

Mabuasehube National Park is the Botswana section of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park — one of Africa’s first transfrontier conservation areas spanning the border between Botswana and South Africa. The remote northern section is characterised by ancient red sand dunes, seasonal pans, and a pristine southern Kalahari ecosystem that sees very few visitors and retains a wilderness quality found almost nowhere else.

The park’s black-maned Kalahari lions are visually spectacular — the harsh conditions producing dramatically dark manes that make these animals immediately distinguishable. Raptors are extraordinary — Mabuasehube is considered one of southern Africa’s premier raptor destinations, with martial eagle, bateleur, lanner falcon, and secretary bird all reliably encountered across the dune crests and pan edges.

Apes & Wildlife Safaris builds Mabuasehube into southern Botswana and Kgalagadi circuits for the adventurous traveller.

⚠️ Must Know Before You Go

Perfectly Kalahari-adapted gemsbok and springbok — the primary prey base — move across the red dunes in thousands in their ancestral landscape.

Plan Well in Advance

Peak season for Botswana fills months ahead. Contact Apes & Wildlife Safaris early to secure the best dates, accommodation, and permits for your group.

02

Stay Multiple Nights

A single day in Mabuasehube National Park scratches the surface. Two to three nights reveals the full depth of the wildlife, landscape, and daily rhythm across dawn, midday, and dusk.

03

Never Miss the Dawn Drive

The first two hours after sunrise deliver the highest predator activity, best photography light, and most concentrated wildlife encounters. Always prioritise the early start.

04

Trust Your Expert Guide

The best wildlife encounters come from guides who read animal behaviour and position the vehicle ahead of the action. Apes & Wildlife Safaris works only with experienced, park-specialist guides.

05

Combine with Other Botswana Parks

Botswana’s parks are most rewarding in combination. Ask Apes & Wildlife Safaris about the ideal circuit — Chobe, the Okavango Delta, and the Central Kalahari together deliver Africa’s most complete safari.
