Black-Maned Lions on Ancient Fossil Riverbeds, Africa’s Most Humbling Wilderness

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is one of the world’s last great wildernesses — 52,800km² of ancient fossil riverbeds, fossilised dunes, and open grassland where wildlife has existed undisturbed since the last Ice Age. This is the ancestral homeland of the San Bushmen, who have lived in harmony with this landscape for over 70,000 years — the oldest continuous human culture on earth.

The Central Kalahari’s lions are famous for their magnificent black manes — a product of the harsh conditions distinguishing these animals from lions elsewhere in Africa. Cheetah density peaks after the rains. Brown hyena — rare everywhere else — is reliably encountered. The fossil riverbeds at dawn, with oryx and springbok herds and the silence of a truly empty continent, is Africa at its most elemental.

Our 7-Day Botswana Safari combines the Central Kalahari with the Okavango Delta — Africa’s supreme wilderness contrast.

Wildlife Highlights

Wildlife & Natural Highlights

01 — Wildlife

Black-Maned Lions

Evolved distinctive black manes in response to harsh conditions. Larger-maned than most African lions — a wildlife photography icon and one of the Kalahari’s supreme sights.

02 — Wildlife

Cheetah

Post-rains green season delivers extraordinary cheetah concentrations following springbok calving. Open fossil riverbeds create perfect hunting terrain and near-ideal photography.

03 — Wildlife

Brown Hyena

Africa’s rarest hyena — reliably encountered in the Central Kalahari where it scavenges the fossil riverbeds at night. A rarely sought but remarkable species.

04 — Wildlife

Oryx & Springbok

Perfectly Kalahari-adapted gemsbok and springbok move across the fossil riverbeds in thousands — the prey base for the entire predator community.

05 — Wildlife

San Bushman Culture

70,000+ years of continuous cultural tradition — the oldest on earth. Guided San cultural experiences offer extraordinary insight into traditional tracking, fire-making, and plant medicine.

06 — Wildlife

Kalahari Night Sky

Zero light pollution and extreme aridity create Africa’s finest stargazing. The Milky Way stretching horizon to horizon from a Kalahari camp is one of the world’s great sky experiences.

01

Plan Well in Advance

Peak season for Botswana fills months ahead. Contact Apes & Wildlife Safaris early to secure the best dates, accommodation, and permits for your group.

02

Stay Multiple Nights

A single day in Central Kalahari Game Reserve scratches the surface. Two to three nights reveals the full depth of the wildlife, landscape, and daily rhythm across dawn, midday, and dusk.

03

Never Miss the Dawn Drive

The first two hours after sunrise deliver the highest predator activity, best photography light, and most concentrated wildlife encounters. Always prioritise the early start.

04

Trust Your Expert Guide

The best wildlife encounters come from guides who read animal behaviour and position the vehicle ahead of the action. Apes & Wildlife Safaris works only with experienced, park-specialist guides.

05

Combine with Other Botswana Parks

Botswana’s parks are most rewarding in combination. Ask Apes & Wildlife Safaris about the ideal circuit — Chobe, the Okavango Delta, and the Central Kalahari together deliver Africa’s most complete safari.

06

Take Out Medical Evacuation Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation cover is essential for all Botswana safari travel. Many parks are remote — evacuation distance matters. Apes & Wildlife Safaris can advise on appropriate cover.
