Nxai Pan National Park
Baines’ famous ancient baobabs painted in 1862 and unchanged today. Resident cheetah. Lions. Springbok in their thousands. Nxai Pan is Botswana’s most accessible and beautiful pan experience.
Cheetah on the Open Plains, Baines’ Famous Baobabs Unchanged Since 1862
Nxai Pan National Park is Botswana’s most accessible salt pan experience — a compact park of open grassland, shallow pans, and ancient woodland delivering an astonishing combination of wildlife and landscape in a manageable circuit from Maun.
The park’s most famous landmark is Baines’ Baobabs — a cluster of enormous ancient trees immortalised in a Thomas Baines painting in 1862, and essentially unchanged since. These massive trees, reflected in the shallow seasonal pan water in the wet season, are one of southern Africa’s most photographed locations. Resident cheetah hunt the open grassland surrounding them. Lion prides patrol the woodland margins. In the wet season, hundreds of thousands of springbok converge in a spectacle of extraordinary scale.
Apes & Wildlife Safaris combines Nxai Pan with the adjacent Makgadikgadi Pans for the complete Botswana pans experience.
Vehicle fees additional. All through Apes & Wildlife Safaris.
Most productive November–April (wet season) when herbivores concentrate and baobabs reflect in pan water. Year-round cheetah and resident lion. Baines’ Baobabs worth visiting in any season.
